On December 13th we celebrated the Feast of St. Lucy, also known as Santa Lucia. St. Lucy is the patron saint of light and patron to the blind. In Sweden it is tradition to celebrate the feast of St. Lucy in the early morning hours of December 13th. The winter days in Sweden are dark and cold. The oldest daughter wakes before dawn on that day and prepares coffee and sweet rolls for her family. She dresses in a white gown with a red sash, and wears a wreath of candles on her head. Carrying a tray, she awakens her family bringing light to the dark, cold morning and announces the coming of Christmas. 2 East celebrated with hot cocoa and cookies while “Santa Lucia” and her little sisters awakened the teachers, bringing warmth to their morning.
