December News

December 7th, 2009

Hello Students and Parents,

Wow! November flew by (with Teddy Bear Day, Mickey Mouse’s Birthday, Children’s Literacy Week, and Thanksgiving!) and now it’s time for Christmas already! We have been doing some wonderful things in 2W. One of the things our students have been most excited about is our new Pen Pal program. We are now writing with a second grade class in Newfoundland, Canada. Our students have written their first letters and are awaiting anxiously for a reply. We were blessed to be visited by St. Nicholas, whose feast day was December 5th. He dropped by to give the primary grades treats in their shoes that were left in the hallway for him on December 7th! We have also been working on an Advent project in which the students place a piece of hay in Jesus’ manger to recognize their good deeds and efforts. (Our manger is getting quite full!)

Students, with Christmas fast approaching, please share a little something with me and our blog readers. What is your favorite thing about Christmas? As for me, I love going making Christmas cookies with my daughter and bringing them to our neighbors houses!

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

Love, Mrs. Simon

What’s New for October?

October 4th, 2009

Dear Students and Parents,

Can you believe it’s October already? We have so many wonderful things planned for this month!

We will be working with a western theme in the beginning of the month for language arts as well as beginning our Pen Pal program!

Science will have us beginning to conduct weekly experiments to go along with our lessons! We’ll be building a class terrarium to look at the needs of living things, with interesting plants and other organisms.

Math will have us moving toward exploring place value, expanded form, ordering and comparing numbers, estimating and rounding, and identifying number words through ninety-nine. Keep working on those addition and subtraction flash cards! The quicker we get, the easier November will be for us!

We will also be working on a service project in 2W! We will be working to collect hats, scarves, and mittens for the Coat Closet in Vineland. More information about this will be coming soon.

Finally, we will be having our Halloween party at the end of the month!

Now I would love to hear from you, my dear students. Many of the animals that live in our yards and local woods are starting to prepare for the winter. What kinds of animals have you seen starting to get ready? What habitat (kind of home) do they live in? What do they need to survive?

September Wrap Up!

October 4th, 2009

Dear Students and Parents,

I hope you enjoyed our first month in school together! We had an exciting month in reading – our carrot themed center and class graph, learning about Hawaii, making a volcano and watching it explode, and our Luau celebration (special thanks to all the parents who helped make this a success!). We even had Gypsy the greyhound and her owner Miss Sammi in to talk with our students about working dogs and the importance of animals to people’s recovery when they are sick. We have some wonderful pictures on our website!

In spelling, we have been enjoyed shaving cream spelling. 2W also likes to get their “bodies moving” with our spelling word work out! We just love playing weekly games to help us prepare for our test!

We’ve been working hard in math, too. We are quickly moving through our math facts and solving word problems. Our class enjoyed using dice to create and solve math problems, Unifix cubes for modeling, and our fishing for numbers game!

We have begun learning how to write complete sentences and apply this knowledge to letter writing. We have written many stories about silly monkeys, magical feathers, walking on the beach, and being caught in a spider’s web! Be on the look out for these publications as students work at their own pace towards publication!

Religion had us exploring God’s wonderful creation and His awesome love for us. We have worked to see God in each other and treat one another with respect and kindness. We are also working on learning a new Act of Contrition.

In science (my favorite subject!) we have been exploring living, non living, and once living things. We can look forward to some wonderful experiments, next month! Be sure to check out our next blog for more details.

So, now students and parents, please take a moment to share with me your favorite activity of September. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts.
